Although the global economy is still facing many uncertainties, the focus of the world at the present moment is on the London Olympic Games. Countries from around the world take part in this international sports event once every four years.
However, hosting the Olympics brings serious economic challenges to the host country. Why are countries willing to host the Olympic Games despite the knowledge that doing so may result in serious overspending - or even mounting debts? This is undoubtedly due to the incredible business opportunities that hosting the Olympics brings, as well as the chance for the host nation to demonstrate its soft power to the world.
Hosting the Olympic Games is just like running a highly risky business: One must haggle over every aspect of the event to break even, conduct a holistic risk assessment beforehand, adopt effective marketing strategies, manage manpower and resources during the event, and find ways to make use of the facilities after the event in order to ensure sustainability.
There are nine articles in this issue, some of which cover the above-mentioned areas in the business field. Four of the articles are on the topic of management, including 'A study on the amalgamation and transformation of human resource departments of subsidiaries,' 'A study on the choice of types of operation of mainland Chinese chain stores by Taiwanese businessmen,' 'Performance measurement model for ISO and non-ISO certified service companies' and 'A case study of dynamic innovative capabilities and performance of Taiwanese Manufacturers.' In addition, there are two articles related to marketing, including 'Exploring the satisfaction of Taiwanese undergraduates - A case study of TransWorld University' and 'A theoretical analysis of enterpriser brand.' The final three articles are on the topic of finance, and include 'Environmental risk assessment and the application of the credit-granting model,' 'An investigation of the relationships between psychological factors, disposition effect and investment performance' and 'A revisit of causality and cointegration between the stock and foreign exchange markets of Taiwan and the stock market of US.'
